A North American aster native to prairie communities, shrubs, and forest edges in the eastern regions of the USA. The species forms large clumps of richly branched stems ending in inflorescences, with dark green, smooth leaves. It spreads across the area with underground semi-creeping runners. Most varieties can be described as more or less trouble-free and long-lived perennials. Easily propagated by dividing clumps in the spring, or by propagating stem cuttings in June. It is also well suited for carpet plantings. Some varieties are susceptible to powdery mildew.
