The original species grows in various parts of Eurasia. It can be found in light forests, forest clearings, and submontane meadows. It is a perennial herb with a short rhizome and basal petiolate leaves. Individual plants usually last in the planting for 4–6 years (or (and longer), they often sift themselves. The assortment offers a wide range of varieties with a variety of flower colors.
The plants are completely undemanding regarding site conditions. They are suited to almost any non-completely drying garden soil and a location in full sun or partial shade. Plants reproduce almost exclusively by seeds.
