The original species originates from the southern USA and northern Mexico.
The plants form densely branched clumps with strongly aromatic leaves and striking inflorescences of deep orange color. It can be encountered in areas of a more semi-desert character, or in communities close to shortgrass prairies. Varieties derived from this species usually bloom from June to August. They can be used in sunny locations with very well-drained, gravelly soil. They do not tolerate overly wet, heavier soils well. Winter hardiness is quite uncertain, especially in the occurrence of severe frost without snow cover. It is more of a short-lived perennial.Habitat circle GR1 - forest edge with drier soil.
