The original species is abundant in several regions of Eurasia.
It primarily inhabits drier, rather short-grass meadows. Plants form looser clumps and spread through semi-creeping rhizomes.Some varieties can repeat flowering after trimming the faded stems. Plants prefer a sunny location with well-drained, rather dry soil. Persistence at the site depends a lot on the location and the chosen variety.
