It originates from northern China and the Korean Peninsula, where it grows in the undergrowth of deciduous forests.
The inflorescence with white flowers grows directly from creeping rhizomes. When blooming, only 10-15 cm high, after flowering up to 30 cm. Blooms in April. Leaves retract in the summer.Requires humus-rich, moist, non-calcareous soils and a shady location.
Use in the understory of deciduous trees and together with rhododendrons and other heathland plants in shaded locations.
